MONEY TALKS BUT IT NEVER EXPLAINS ITSELF- DENNIS ADAMS
IN THE RED, the title of Dennis Adams’ new exhibition is an American idiom meaning: more financial losses than gains. The origin of this expression comes from the bookkeeping practice of using red ink to record losses on financial balance sheets, in opposition to using black ink to record credits.
Against the backdrop of the global financial crisis of recent years, Adams has produced a series of photographic montages that foreground text fragments that take the form of eccentric propositions and first person narratives about money. These texts are over laid on various photographic backgrounds that push and pull against the visual and semantic readings of the texts.
Dennis Adams is internationally recognized for his urban interventions and museum installations that reveal historical and political undercurrents in photography, cinema, public space and architecture. Over the last twenty-five years, he has realized over fifty urban projects in cities worldwide from Antwerp to Zagreb. His work has been the subject of numerous one-person exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout North America and Europe. His work is public collections including the Museum Contemporary Art, Chicago; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, Paris; Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, Antwerp; the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich; and the Fotomusem Winterthur, Zurich.
